Not all families approach disabilities with a deficit approach, and this directly affects their children and their education. For example, self-care, home care, academic skills, community access, vocational skills, and independent-living skills are typical targets. However, not all families share these values, so some children may enter school still reliant on others to help with feeding, dressing, and toileting. If educators fail to take the time to understand the family context, they may mistakenly conclude that the student is less capable than she is.
