Discuss a conflict theorist's view of the police and the criminal justice system
What will be an ideal response?
A conflict theorist would ask uncomfortable questions about the impact of the police in conjunction with the rest of the criminal justice system. Who has the power and control in the system and when acting together, who are the individuals or groups against whom this power is likely to be targeted? Remember that for a conflict sociologist, competition and disagreements within and among any given set of groups is inevitable, given that each group is seeking to maximize its own standing and access to resources in a given society. The interest of the conflict theorist in exposing and decrying the negative results of imbalances in power, control, and the unequal distribution of resources in society becomes evident.
