Transcultural nursing has become a specialty nursing since 1977

a. How do transcultural nursing and culturally competent nursing differ?
b. How do you assess a client's health beliefs and practices?
c. How do you become culturally competent as a nurse?

Students' answers should include the following:
a. Culturally competent nursing is a process where a nurse learns the culture of his or her client and his or her family. Transcultural nursing provides nursing care within another culture.
Discussion can be the details of both of the two spectrums of nursing and how it affects the care of the clients.
b. Assessing the health beliefs and practices begins with the rapport the nurse has with the client at the start of the assessment process. Specific questions should be asked (Box 8-4 has some suggestions).
With the answers, the nurse can understand health or drug-seeking behaviors, lack of acknowledging certain symptoms or conditions, lack of medical continuity or health promotion, or other such things that may be contributed to cultural behaviors and beliefs.
Discussion can be elaborating or debating this topic and some suggestions as to what a nurse may do with different ethnic groups.
c. To be a culturally competent nurse, the individual must listen to clients and explore other cultures and groups of people and their backgrounds and beliefs. This can be an evolving process for the nurse as experience is acquired.
Elaboration on what it takes to be culturally competent can be discussed.
