Discuss the different forms of birth assistance that is available.
What will be an ideal response?
While some women prefer the presence of a physician at the birth of their child, others prefer the more involved and hands-on orientation of a midwife, doula, or trained labor coach. Today, midwives are typically registered nurses with additional training and certification in nurse-midwifery. Like doctors, midwives provide prenatal care. While the prenatal care provided by doctors and midwives is quite similar, many women report greater satisfaction with midwives In addition, many midwives provide care to mothers after the birth of their babies in order to monitor and assist with issues such as recovery, prevention of postpartum depression, and breastfeeding.
Doulas are trained labor coaches that have extensive training to assist a pregnant woman and her partner in the labor and delivery process. In fact, many of them are certified through educational programs as childbirth assistants. They often assist midwives or doctors in birth-related activities and provide a constant presence during labor. Doulas can act as a woman's advocate as their knowledge is often extensive due to their training and certification. They may even be able to provide another perspective if a question of using an intervention arises during the childbirth process.
