Laws in Louisiana often differ from those throughout the remainder of the United States. What is the historical reason behind the difference?
What will be an ideal response?
The English imported the common law, and unlike the other colonies, which were founded by the English, Louisiana was founded by the French. French emperor Louis XIV issued a Charter for the development of Louisiana in 1712. It contained an order requiring the application of French law, also known as civil law. In 1803 the United States took possession of the territory. The first territorial legislature of Louisiana chose to retain the civil law.
