How could Horney’s concept of basic anxiety explain Martin’s exaggerated independence? What mechanisms are used by Martin to help him deal with basic anxiety? How does Adler’s concept of social interest compare with Horney’s trend of moving away from people?

What will be an ideal response?

According to Horney, basic anxiety (feelings of insecurity) develop(s) as a result of a lack of love during childhood. As the case study indicates, Martin did not receive much affection from either parent. Horney suggested that we protect ourselves from basic anxiety in a number of ways, one of which is withdrawal (or moving away from others) whereby a person distances him/herself emotionally from others in order to not be hurt by them. This seems to be reflective of Martin’s behavior considering his lack of relationships. This withdrawal is similar to Adler’s concept of low social interest, which can also be shown in a lack of close relationships. Both concepts are also similar in that both can be created by neglect during childhood.
