Describe the clinical picture of delirium

What will be an ideal response?


The clinical picture of delirium is rapid onset with severe disorientation and agitation in otherwise coherent older adults. It may look like dementia and therefore be ignored or attempted to be managed by behavioral techniques. If left untreated it can result in death and must be treated as a medical emergency. Social workers would not directly treat the symptoms of delirium, recognition and referral to an emergency department is critical as Educating families, and perhaps the public about the potential risks, symptoms and causes of dementia is a legitimate role for social workers.
