How should focus group participants be selected?
What will be an ideal response?
Focus groups should first establish a sample pool. The sample pool should be created using one of the standard sampling strategies in the social sciences. From this sample pool, the smaller focus groups can be formed. A census sample, or survey group, can be used to find the initial pool. Then the group is stratified into a smaller group based on some dividing characteristic. Then the focus groups are chosen from the appropriate pool. A third potential strategy is to use focus group interviews to read through the interview schedule and discuss the level of language, comprehensibility of questions, question order, etc.
