Describe the role females play in gang involvement.

What will be an ideal response?

From the late 1990s to 2010, law enforcement agencies reported that a national total of 6.1–7.7% of gang members were females. However, recent research by the National Gang Center indicated that up to 30% of gang members are female. Of those females who are involved with a gang, many are fully active members and not just associates of male gang members. The National Council for Crime and Delinquency found that 72% of female gang members had been asked, forced, or volunteered to commit an act of violence. Sixty-six percent of female gang members had dealt drugs. Female gang members often experience a high rate of abuse, either from family or other gang members.
