A modem is a communications device responsible for converting or
encoding a message from a form readable by one device to a format
more appropriate for another device. In our most common example,
a modem is responsible for converting the message from a computer
into a form that can easily be transmitted, in this case, converting the
computer’s binary message (ones and zeroes) into an analog signal ready
for transmission through copper wires.
