Discuss three ways the synapse can be cleared following neurotransmitter release.

What will be an ideal response?

Neurochemicals bind very briefly to receptors, after which they are released back into the synaptic gap. In the gap, neurochemicals are deactivated in three different ways. The first method is simple diffusion away from the synapse. Like any other molecule, neurochemicals diffuse away from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. Recall, however, that the astrocytes surrounding the synapse influence the diffusion of neurochemicals away from the synapse, so there are limits to this process. In the second method for ending chemical transmission, neurochemical molecules are deactivated by enzymes in the synaptic gap. In the third process, reuptake, the presynaptic membrane uses its own set of receptors known as transporters to recapture molecules of neurochemical and return them to the interior of the axon terminal. In the terminal, the neurochemicals can be repackaged in vesicles for subsequent release.
