How effective is the male condom in providing protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?
What will be an ideal response?
Condoms are a highly effective protection against STIs that are transmitted mainly through genital secretions (semen, cervical, and vaginal secretions) because they keep the secretions away from the other person. STIs in this category include chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, hepatitis B, and HIV. Condoms also provide some protection against STIs that are transmitted mainly by skin-to-skin contact, such as herpes, syphilis, and human papillomavirus (HPV). However, they offer no protection against these diseases if the area producing the microbe is not covered by the condom.
