Explain why pattern bargaining is useful to unions.
What will be an ideal response?
Pattern bargaining shares many of the advantages of centralized bargaining by bringing the full power of several unions into negotiations with one employer. When employers know that a particular contract will determine the standard for the industry, they are more likely to have to negotiate with each other, as well as with the union, over terms and conditions of employment. More importantly, they all understand that they will not be able to compete on the basis of a wage and/or benefit advantage as the unions intend to set the same wages for all workers. In turn, this allows the union to "take wages out of competition" and counter management arguments that wages are a determining competitive advantage or factor. Pattern bargaining can also help unions sell contract settlements to their constituents as members see that they are getting no better, or worse, than their peers in other companies.
