What are some of the major reasons that segregation continues to occur in the United States today? Name and fully explain at least two ways in which that segregation plays out.

What will be an ideal response?

Segregation due to simple racial discrimination (e.g., through redlining); segregation within a race based on poverty status (middle- and upper-class black people in one neighborhood, poor black people in another); segregation due to simple income discrimination (poor people of multiple races in one neighborhood; middle-class and affluent people of multiple races in another). Racism, power, and control of society's dominant group, misconceptions about other groups, people's preferences for being in homogenous communities, white flight, and other factors lead to the continuation of segregation today.
