Who is impacted most by the crime of stalking? What is the general scope of the problem and what are some ways it is being addressed?
What will be an ideal response?
The most common victim of stalking is a young woman. Most know their stalkers in some capacity—such as a co-worker, fellow student, etc. College female students are at highest risk for stalking. The FBI has indicated about 30% of women who are murdered were stalked by their former partner before the homicide. Stalking is similar to other crimes against women, such as rape and domestic violence, in that the motive is about dominance and control over the victim. Stalking was criminalized as recently as 1994 . Unfortunately, this type of crime is difficult to prove and thus most cases do not result in conviction.
