An alpha channel is an optional layer of image data containing an additional 8 bits of grayscale data that can be used to control transparency affecting the entire image. In most rendering and image editing programs, pixels in the image that contain 0 value alpha channel (black) values are fully transparent. Pixels that contain a value of 255 (white) are fully opaque.
