Between 2 and 3 months of age, infants begin cooing, which involves deliberate vowel sounds. These sounds are a form of vocal play and are likely to be heard when babies are awake, alert, and contented. In the late stage of cooing, coos include different vowel-like sounds and combinations of vowel-like sounds. At about 6 months of age, babbling begins. Babbling involves repeated strings of consonants and vowels. As infants become more accustomed to the language around them, babbling becomes less generic and more similar to words and sounds in their native language. The average infant speaks his or her first word at around 1 year of age. A first word might be a complete word or syllable and usually has more than one meaning. These one-word expressions are holophrases. First words are usually those they hear often and are meaningful to them. English-speaking infants tend to use nouns first.
