Throughout his life and certainly during his presidency Jefferson was influenced by the Enlightenment, particularly reason and science. His thirst for scientific knowledge led him to research fossils, and ultimately write about mammoths in his book Notes on Virginia. Upon his inauguration, Jefferson also supported Charles Wilson Peale's expedition to exhume the remains of a mastodon in upstate New York. Jefferson's devotion to scientific discovery prompted his political opponents and enemies to name him the "mammoth of democracy."
