In an essay, discuss where in India Green Revolution technology was implemented and some of its positive and negative outcomes.
What will be an ideal response?
The Green Revolution relied heavily on industrial fertilizers and pesticides to dramatically increase yields of hybrid crop strains. These techniques were implemented in the Punjab area with great success, solidifying the state's position as the breadbasket of India. India was transformed from a region of chronic food shortages to one of self-sufficiency. Grain production more than doubled between 1970 and the mid-1990s. Many argue it has been an ecological and social disaster, though. Environmental problems from heavy use of chemical pesticides and
fertilizers, vulnerabilities of new crop strains, contamination of water, and the exclusion of less prosperous farmers from the technology are some of the outcomes.
