First, the helper uses a nonjudgmental listening cycle to gain rapport and understand the problem. This forms the foundation of the process. Second, the helper offers to be an ally. Third, focus is on the positive and on client attempts, however small, to accomplish the goal. Fourth, the helper will offer feedback or confrontation and asks for commitment. Finally, the helper will show continued enthusiasm for the client’s goals and interest in the client’s feelings and progress.
