What is civil commitment and who is it used for?

What will be an ideal response?

• Civil commitment statutes are designed to keep sexual predators out of the community even after they have completed their maximum criminal sentence.Once the inmate serves his or her time and is nearing release, the state files a petition to have him or her involuntarily and indefinitely committed to a mental institution or special correctional setting that is a blend of a prison and a mental institution. If the petition is successful, once finishing the prison sentence, the inmate is confined in the mental health facility until he or she is judged by mental health professionals to no longer be a danger to the community.
