Discuss why an entrepreneur might become overly committed to the entrepreneur’s business, to the point of intentionally engaging in an illegal activity.
There could be a number of reasons:
- The entrepreneur might perceive the failure of the business as a personal failure and believe that failure is not an option. As stated by Chris: “I was so hell bent on making my business the same kind of success I’ve had in the rest of my career, I just overlooked the ramifications of it” and also “I felt it was up to me to turn things around and I tried to do everything myself”.
- The entrepreneur might believe that profits should be pursued at any cost. Profit is not the objective of business. Profit is the consequence of doing business well. Furthermore, business must adhere to the applicable laws and regulations as a bare minimum.
- The entrepreneur might have an “end justify the means” narrow approach suggesting that engaging in an illegal activity, at least temporarily, could result in some good later on, for example keeping the company afloat and employ other people in the business. In ethics, the end never justifies the means.
