Answer all of the following questions: (a) Does the AB single-subject research design control for maturation as a threat to internal validity? (b) Explain how it does, or does not? (c) Does the limited AB single-subject design control for maturation as a threat? (d) Explain how it does or does not?
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: The AB single-subject design controls for maturation because there is a baseline period where the target behavior is repeatedly measured but treatment is not yet being offered. These repeated measurements constitute a gauge of the effect of maturation upon the target behavior. With this design, the measurements during the treatment period are compared to the measurements during the baseline period to see if they are more positive at a statistically significant level. If maturation is taking place, this is controlled by this comparison of treatment and baseline scores. The limited AB design, however, does not control for maturation because the baseline for this design is only one score rather than a series of scores. With one score, you do not have data that could show a trend. With only one score, you do not know if the behavior is changing.
