Briefly discuss the relationship between NAFTA and environmental protection

What will be an ideal response?

NAFTA was set up to promote free trade among the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Yet, it is possible that if the environmental laws of any of the participating nations were viewed as a barrier to trade and development, they could be overturned. Also, there is the obvious fear that industries might relocate to whichever nations have the weakest environmental laws to increase their profit. The tri-national Commission on Environmental Cooperation (CEC) has made an exhaustive study to see if these fears are based in reality. Their findings in general have been that NAFTA has been environmentally neutral to slightly positive and that governmental regulating agencies should stay tuned to trade developments and look for ways to encourage win-win scenarios between free trade and environmental quality.
