Patrick Schlitz, in a roundly criticized essay, cites evidence that lawyers disproportionately suffer from depression, anxiety, alcoholism, drug abuse, and suicide and that much of this behavior stems from unhappiness with the practice of law. Schlitz concludes that the legal profession is one of the most “unhappy and unhealthy [professions] on the face of the earth” and that “lawyers seem to be among the most depressed people in America.” Heinz, Nelson, Sandefur, and Laumann, in their study of Chicago lawyers, provide little support for Schlitz’s conclusions in their study. The Chicago study indicates that 84% of the respondents stated they were either satisfied or very satisfied with their legal career; roughly 10% were neutral, 5% were dissatisfied, and 1.6% were very dissatisfied. Although women expressed unhappiness over the lack of understanding of the challenges of motherhood, there was no significant difference between the satisfaction expressed by men and women, a finding that is supported by a study of lawyers in Toronto, Canada. The Toronto study also found that a significant percentage of lawyers (77.7% of men and 78.7% of women) stated that if they were starting their career all over again they would choose to become a lawyer.
