In 1956, an attempt was made on the life of Frank Costello, boss of the Luciano Family, and his ally, Albert Anastasia, boss of the Mineo Family was murdered. These events led to a meeting of the bosses in 1957 in Apalachin, New York.
The meeting in Apalachin drew the attention of local law enforcement and generated news headlines around the country.
The Senate responded by establishing the Select Committee on Improper Activities in the Labor or Management Field, chaired by Senator John McClellan of Arkansas. Committee hearings led to the passage of the Landrum-Griffin Act in 1959.
