Routine-based strategies are interventions focused on naturally occurring activities in the child's or family’s life that can provide meaningful learning experiences. Student examples will vary, but one example would be a teacher using the naturally occurring routine of snack or lunch time to teach fine motor skills. Children must grasp utensils such as forks or spoons to eat with if they are old enough. The teacher can show children how to hold their utensils properly for different types of foods. For example, mashed potatoes might be easier to eat with a spoon which requires a scooping motion. If a child is eating a piece of pie, however, he or she may need to use a fork to make a stabbing motion. For young children too young to use utensils, a teacher might give them varying sizes of food that children can pinch or grab.
