Explain how high gas flow rates can lead to contamination.
What will be an ideal response?
High gas flow rates waste shielding gases and may lead to contamination. The contamination comes from turbulence in the gas at high flow rates. Air is drawn into the gas envelope by the venturi effect around the edge of the nozzle. Also, the air can be drawn in under the nozzle if the torch is held at too sharp an angle to the metal.
