Discuss the ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in people who have cancer and their survival rates
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Poverty is an obstacle to receiving quality health care. Poor Americans are more likely to lack health insurance, as well as to engage in behaviors that increase cancer risk, such as smoking, physical inactivity, and poor diet. A 2007 ACS study estimates that, healthcare being equal, 37% of cancers deaths could have been avoided. Ethnic groups and minorities, (compared to Caucasians,) have higher death rates in the majority of all cancers except breast cancer. In that issue, Caucasian women have higher rates than any other ethnic group.
