The Council of Nicaea was the first mass meeting for a policy decision regarding several divisive issues among the different branches of Christianity. Because Christianity, at its inception, relied on proselytizers who would go out among the provinces of Rome and gain converts, different methods and practices were used in different areas, without any standardization. The key matter on the agenda was to discuss the Arian heresy and come up with a decision (the fact that it was deemed a heresy indicates the outcome). The decision resulted in the Nicene Creed, and the meeting served to underscore the differences in practice among Christians. It is also significant that Constantine the Great attended and weighed in on the decision, although he was not an ordained clergy member. He simply asserted his power over a significant force within his empire.
