Discuss the difficulties you have had in “engaging” particular clients, and the reasons for those difficulties. In retrospect what might you have done differently to be more successful in engaging those clients in an intervention process?
What will be an ideal response?
Client engagement depends in large part on the social worker’s ability to utilize the skills of empathy, authenticity, and focusing. Students may select from the following list of “types” of clients who may be difficult for them to engage for various reasons:
• Youth
• Older adults
• Persons of different races
• Substance abusers
• Mandated clients
• Clients with physical disabilities
• Clients with psychotic disorders
• Client who express much anger
• Clients whose lifestyles are repugnant to the social worker
Students should be asked to consider the challenges and “personal characteristics” of both the client and social worker reflected in these engagement difficulties, and to consider the personal values that are triggered by clients that serve as impediments.
