Contrast animal relationships based on molecular data versus based on morphological and

developmental data.

What will be an ideal response?

Molecular data confirm the distinctions between radial and bilaterally symmetric animals, that is, the
Radiata and Bilateria. The molecular data have also led to the naming of two major clades, the
Lophotrochozoa and Ecdysozoa within protostomes. However, molecular data do not confirm that the
so-called acoelomates and pseudocoelomates should be split into separate distinct taxons. The current
hypothesis is that the acoelomate condition represents an evolutionary loss of the condition, and
therefore it was not the ancestral condition. The psuedocoelomate condition is now hypothesized to
have evolved independently in rotifers and roundworms. The molecular data also suggest that
segmentation evolved independently in three different clades rather than in two. Molecular data also
confirm that echinoderms, hemichordates, and chordates are all deuterostomes.
