Describe how phytochrome is used to determine plant spacing.

What will be an ideal response?

Leaf shading increases the amount of far-red light relative to red light. Plants measure the amount of far-red light bounced back to them from neighboring plants. The closer together plants are, the more far-red relative to red light they perceive and the more likely they are to grow taller-a strategy for outcompeting others for sunlight.
