The carbon monoxide and nicotine in cigarette smoke both damage the inner walls of arteries. The hypertension stimulated by cigarette smoking also promotes arterial wall damage. Enhanced levels of circulating fatty acids from smoking are then more likely to adhere to the damaged areas. Smoking also promotes blood clotting (clustering of platelets and increased viscosity of blood), further adding to the pile of substances.
