With symmetric encryption, the sender runs the email through the encryption program and a key is created that scrambles the file. Then the sender sends the encrypted email to the recipient, and separately transmits the decoding key, which the recipient uses to open the encrypted message.
With asymmetric encryption, the user makes a public key available to anyone who might send him or her encrypted information, and a private key that he or she keeps. When people wish to send a message, they use the public key to encrypt it, and then the recipient uses the private key to open it.
