The half-life of plutonium-234 is 9 hours. If 80 milligrams is present now, how much will be present in 3 days?

a.7.936
b.63.495
c.0.312
d.45.948

The trick to this question is determining how many half-life cycles there are in 3 days.

(3 days x 24 hours = 72 hours) / 9 hour half-life = 8 half-life cycles.

Now you simply need to divide your original sample in half, 8 times.

((((((((80 / 2) / 2) / 2) / 2) / 2) / 2) / 2) / 2) = 0.312

a simplified version if this equation could also be written as 80 x 0.58

I prefer the simplified method because it's easier to input in a calculator without losing count of your half-life cycles, but prefer the full explanation because it help to understand the method.
