What is exhibitionism? When is it considered a paraphilia?
What will be an ideal response?
The complement to voyeurism is exhibitionism ("flashing"), in which the person derives sexual pleasure from exposing his genitals to an unsuspecting person. The pronoun "his" is used advisedly, since exhibitionists are usually men. The woman who wears a dress that reveals most of her bosom is likely to be thought of as attractive rather than abnormal. When the male exposes himself, however, his behavior is considered offensive. Here again, whether a sexual behavior is considered abnormal depends greatly on whether the person doing it is a male or a female. When fantasies, urges, or behavior involving surprise exposure of the genitals to a stranger lasts at least six months and causes distress or difficulty, it is diagnosed to be paraphilic.
