The elderly are the fastest growing age group in the United States
How has the criminal justice system reacted to their victimization? What are the programs currently used and what programs are still necessary to deal with elderly victimization? (pages 198-200 in text)
The criminal justice system has created proactive and reactive crime prevention strategies such as creating policy that promotes elderly safety by providing security surveys of elderly residential homes, reorganizing community watch programs and using crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED), victim-witness programs designed specifically for the elderly, educating the elderly, senior victim assistance units in law enforcement agencies, the TRIAD program and other programs. Students might also address the increase in the collection of statistical data, creating policy that address issues for the elderly, the creation of agencies that are focused on assisting the elderly, and developing ways to reduce fear among the elderly.
