What are the main reasons for students dropping out of high school, and what can be done to reduce the risk?

What will be an ideal response?

Students' answers may vary.

Students drop out of school for school-related, economic, family-related, peer-related, and personal reasons. School-related problems are consistently associated with dropping out of school (Dupere & others, 2015), and at least one study indicated that nearly 50 percent of dropouts were for school-related reasons. Many school dropouts have friends who also are school dropouts. Approximately one-third of the girls who drop out of school do so for personal reasons, such as pregnancy or marriage.

School-based dropout programs involving early reading programs, tutoring, counseling, mentoring, creating caring environments and relationships, and offering community-service opportunities can be used to reduce the dropout rate. Early detection of children's school-related difficulties, and getting children engaged with school in positive ways, are important strategies for reducing the dropout rate.
