Sales promotion is a short-term inducement of value offered to arouse interest in buying a good or service. The advantages of sales promotion are: (1) The short-term nature of these programs often stimulates sales for their duration. (2) The number of sales promotion tools makes this promotion element very flexible. The disadvantages of sales promotion are: (1) Sales promotions cannot be the sole basis for a campaign because gains are often temporary and sales drop off when the deal ends. If sales promotions are conducted continuously, they lose their effectiveness. (2) Some sales promotions are easily abused. (3) Sales promotions can lead to promotion wars between competitors. Many sales promotions are easily duplicated by a firm's competitors, if perceived successful. (4) There has been legislation enacted to regulate some aspects of sales promotions. See Figure 14-2.
