Phobias tend to be specific, such as fear of snakes or needles, but they also include social phobias (the fear of public scrutiny) and agoraphobia (fear of open, busy areas). In each of these cases, there is a specific object, situation or event that can be pointed to as the cause of the phobia. For generalized anxiety disorder, however, there is no such specific event. Rather, the anxiety is free floating and the main component of the disorder appears to be pervasive worrying about numerous problems. The biopsychosocial perspective examines the interaction of multiple factors (biological, psychological and social) as contributing to anxiety disorders. Biological imbalances may predispose one to a panic attack, for example. However, after the initial attack, certain social situations, such as being in a crowd, may trigger the symptoms again.
