Address common misconceptions. The above activity can be used to illustrate how division does not always result in a quotient that is smaller than the initial amount.

Examples of misconceptions
1. Adding numerator and denominator 3/8 + 2/8 = 5/16
2. Ignore the denominator 4/5 + 4/10 = 8/10
3. Treat denominator the same as addition and subtraction and not understanding why the denominator changes – in multiplication of fractions you are finding a part of a part.
4. Inability to estimate product for example 1/2 × 6 1/2 = 12 1/8 looks right since in whole number multiplication the product is larger not smaller.
5. Must know what the unit is — get an answer of 3/8 but when you ask of what – they cannot answer.
