Given the number of excellent, workable discipline tactics described in this chapter,
a. Explain why those overall discipline approaches are seldom, if ever, used today in their entirety.
b. Identify five specific discipline tactics described in the chapter that you believe would be especially effective and explain how and why you would use them.
What will be an ideal response?
a. The approaches are rarely used in their entirety today because they are either (a) incomplete as regards prevention of misbehavior AND dealing with misbehavior, (b) too cumbersome, unwieldy, and time consuming for teachers, or (3) not sufficiently compatible with newer views that emphasize student self-control, active participation, and responsibility.
b. Look for any five tactics correctly identified, such as reinforcement, congruent communication, lesson management, democratic teaching, influence (rather than controlling tactics), conferring dignity, inviting cooperation, providing sense of belonging, or conflict resolution.
Criteria for judging responses: the correctness and logic of student explanations of how they would use the tactics they have identified.
