Abraham Lincoln once said that the Constitution should be the "political religion of the nation." What do you think he meant by this? Would the founders agree? Why or why not?

What will be an ideal response?

An ideal response will:
1, Discuss how Americans have a deep reverence toward our Constitution. We treat the Constitution as our nonreligious "bible"—the written document that Americans deeply respect and obey.
2, Discuss how the founders might be surprised by this assertion. The Constitution involved a number of compromises, ambiguous provisions, and generalizations regarding the authority of the national government.
3, Describe how the founders provided checks and balances, distributed power among the three branches of government, and divided power among the federal and the state governments, all for practical purposes. The Constitution was not based on a set of sacred principles.
4, Note that today we value the wisdom of the founders, who created a document that has survived for more than 200 years.
