MECHANICAL SYSTEMS: The mechanical systems include the dedicated fixture system and the universal mechanical system. Both of these systems utilize a bench to which the vehicle is secured, and once this is accomplished the vehicle is said to be “squared to the bench”
DEDICATED FIXTURE SYSTEM This system uses special vehicle-specific fixtures which when bolted to the bench at specified reference points will match various dimensional and mounting locations on the undercarriage. A Fixture Setup Sheet is developed for each vehicle by the equipment manufacturer and is used to determine the exact placement for the fixtures.
UNIVERSAL MECHANICAL MEASURING SYSTEM. As with the dedicated fixture system, this system also uses a bench to calibrate the measuring system to the specific vehicle. In this case the vehicle is attached at the pinch welds to square it to the rack thus “squaring it to the bench”. A vehicle-specific setup sheet is used to determine the placement of a series of adjustable tubes that are attached to the rack. When these tubes are extended to the specified length, height or width, the squareness of the undercarriage can be determined.
SIMULTANEOUS UNIVERSAL LASER MEASURING SYSTEMS These systems all
use a laser which may be manipulated manually or they may utilize a computer data base. Each system allows the technician to simultaneously monitor the undercarriage by directing the laser beam at or through targets that are suspended from the undercarriage at pre-determined locations.
