Women acquired the right to vote in 1920 . Progressives envisioned modern women active in politics, while popular culture reinforced ideas that women should be thin and pretty and should dedicate their lives to their husbands. The high school graduation rate for women increased, and many of these educated women entered the workforce. The availability of birth control greatly increased many women's life options and improved women's health.
