Urinalysis tells us about the general health of body organs. It can detect a variety of substances that an individual may have filtered from the bloodstream. Because urine consists of about 95% water, the remaining 5% consists of other substances from the body. These materials can be drugs, microorganisms, small molecular subunits of nutrients (such as glucose), or various cellular components (red blood cells or white blood cells are abnormal constituents of urine). Any substance that is ingested, inhaled, or injected may show up in the analysis, depending on the solubility of the compound. These analyses can also be used to determine the general health of an individual.
