Explain the goal of a reading assessment. To obtain a valid reading assessment, indicate the methods in which a teacher can obtain information. Describe the advantages and disadvantages for each method

What will be an ideal response?

Goal of reading assessment: To point to specific strengths and weaknesses and aid in planning instructional objectives.

Assessment procedures:
- FORMAL: standardized tests
*Advantages: norm-referenced/objective; can help determine which students are experiencing reading difficulties and need further assessment

*Disadvantages: Strict administration, scoring, and interpretation procedures

- INFORMAL: observations & informal inventories
*Advantages: Provides information about student's general reading level; can estimate ability at 3 levels (independent, instructional, frustration); can assess silent reading; can determine listening/hearing capacity; when used with other diagnostic assessments, helps teacher plan needed corrective instruction and reading materials.

*Disadvantages: Time consuming because of individual administration; may not provide effective assessment of decoding skills; reliability less than adequate
