If a prison allows Catholics, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Protestants and adherents of other mainstream religions to attend their respective worship services, should Satanist, Wiccans, and followers of other less-traditional religions also be
allowed to have their own worship services?
Answers may vary, but should note that prions officials cannot restrict what an inmate believes although religious acts can be restricted if they can be shown to present safety and security problems (for example) in the prison environment. If a religious ceremony requires inmates to have a knife and a live chicken so a sacrifice can be performed, the prison officials may have legitimate penological interests in preventing that particular religious practice.
But, if no legitimate penological interest is raised by the practice of a religion, a strong argument can be made that Satanists, Wiccans, and others have as much right to practice their religion as do followers of mainstream religions.
