Many different issues are taken into consideration when selecting assistive technology. A key element is determining a student’s skills, including communication, physical, motor, cognitive, and sensory abilities. In addition to skills, students’ preferences should be taken into consideration with AAC decisions. Decision-making teams also need to consider with whom the individual is communicating (i.e., communication partner), as a receiver needs to be able to understand and use the means of communicating. Finally, when selecting an aided electronic AAC, decision-making teams need to evaluate the mean of selection (i.e., direct vs. scanning), type of voice output, voice quality, memory size of device, portability, type of symbols, and message construction.
